Hierve el Agua: Complete Guide 2025

Hierve el Agua is one of Mexico’s most spectacular natural wonders β€” a set of stunning petrified waterfalls and natural rock pools sitting high in the mountains above the Oaxaca Valley. If you’re staying in Oaxaca, this is an absolute must-do experience, and at Maka Hostel we organize the best-value day trip there!

What is Hierve el Agua?

Located about 70km east of Oaxaca City, Hierve el Agua (meaning “the water boils”) is a set of natural rock formations that look like frozen waterfalls. The carbonite-rich spring water has been flowing over the cliff edge for thousands of years, depositing minerals that have built up these incredible petrified waterfall formations.

The Maka Hostel Day Trip

Our Hierve el Agua day trip runs every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. We don’t just go to Hierve el Agua β€” we make a full day of it, visiting four incredible stops:

  • Hierve el Agua β€” Swim in the mineral pools and see the petrified waterfalls
  • Mitla Archaeological Site β€” Ancient Zapotec ruins with incredible geometric stone mosaics
  • TeotitlΓ‘n del Valle β€” Famous weaving village where you can see artisans at work
  • Tule Tree β€” The world’s widest tree by circumference, over 2,000 years old!
