Exploring Oaxaca City

Oaxaca is one of Mexico’s most magical destinations — a city full of culture, incredible food, ancient history, and warm people. As solo travelers ourselves, we know exactly how to make the most of your time here. Here are the top 10 things to do in Oaxaca, curated by the team at Maka Hostel.

1. Explore the Zócalo (Main Square)

The heart of Oaxaca City, the Zócalo is surrounded by colonial architecture, shaded by laurel trees, and buzzing with life at all hours. Grab a coffee at one of the cafes around the square and watch the world go by.

2. Visit Monte Albán

One of Mexico’s most important archaeological sites, Monte Albán is a pre-Columbian Zapotec city sitting dramatically atop a flattened mountain overlooking the Oaxaca Valley. Open every day, about 20 minutes from the city center.

3. Day Trip to Hierve el Agua

Arguably the most stunning sight near Oaxaca, Hierve el Agua is a set of petrified waterfalls with natural swimming pools high in the mountains. We organize trips every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from Maka Hostel — MX$400 for guests!

4. Mezcal Tasting

Oaxaca is the heartland of mezcal production. Visit the many mezcalerías around the city for tastings, or join one of our mezcal distillery tours to see how it’s made the traditional way.

5. Mercado Benito Juárez & 20 de Noviembre

These two adjacent markets are essential Oaxaca experiences. Try tlayudas (the massive Oaxacan pizza), mole negro, chapulines (grasshoppers!), and fresh tropical fruits. Maka Hostel is just a few blocks away.
